XIV International Interdisciplinary Scientific and Practical
Symposium of Medical Anthropologists
Medical Anthropology:
Issues of Health and Health Preservation
In the Context of Global Transformations
and Local Processes
Our annual symposium will be held on September 23-25, 2026; on the basis of the Miklukho-Maklay Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow: in a mixed format.
Medical anthropologists and bioethicists, sociocultural anthropologists, ethnologists, ethnographers, psychologists, sociologists, public health specialists, philosophers, historians, folklorists, and other researchers interested in collaborating with medical anthropologists working in the fields of health preservation, public health, medicine – health and disease problems, prevention, treatment, and recovery of a person within the framework of various medical systems, practices, and methods are invited to participate in the interdisciplinary event. Taking into account the practical orientation of the XIV symposium, we also invite psychotherapists, specialists in the field of mediation, psychophysiological care, social work, representatives of various medical professions and other scientists and practitioners.
The symposium always involves a wide range of topics and issues (see information about previous events on the MA&B website – www.medanthro.ru ) related to the fundamental aspects of medical anthropology, medical ethnology, medical ethnography, healthcare and healthcare. Topics related to medical anthropology are also always welcome, such as problems of medical sociology, bioethics, medical ethics, public health and public health, etc.
We will be happy to provide an opportunity for specialists of various fields and qualifications (up to novice researchers) to work.
We are waiting not only for your individual applications for reports and presentations, but also for suggestions on the organization of problem-themed meetings within the framework of the symposium, which you and a group of your colleagues could prepare directly.
The Organizing Committee suggests holding the symposium mainly in the format of round tables (RT), with 5-7 reports strictly on a given topic and fruitful professional discussions – discussing the central issues of the stated topic with the participation of planned debaters (2-3) and other interested participants.
Priority sections of the work of the XIV symposium, within which thematic RT-s and sections will be organized:
- medical anthropology: theoretical aspects
- medical research in the context of history and culture
- current problems of healthcare and health preservation in a medical and anthropological context
- traditional medicine and medical systems (TMS): origins, history, transformations
- mental health of a person/population in conditions of instability and crises
Suggestions for organizing sections (up to 10 reports), round tables (5-7 reports with a lengthy discussion), conferences/round tables (10-20 reports and practical demonstrations) with a justification of your topic and a list of issues to discuss (indicating the main participants specially invited by the organizer) are waiting until June 25 (please note: since a number of thematic associations have already been formed by the organizing committee, we recommend that you apply for the organization as soon as possible).
The working language of the symposium is Russian
(languages for reports with translation: Chinese, English, Spanish).
Absentee (fictitious, limited to submitting an application) participation is NOT considered! The program will be updated online on all websites during the symposium!

*No more than 2 authors of one report are allowed (only in the case of their direct participation in the implementation of the topic and joint presentation of the report during the presentation); data for each co-speaker is written in the application – filled in in one column through “;”
One individual application from the speaker is accepted (the second is possible if there is a co-speaker).
The Organizing Committee reserves the right to select reports based on the quality of the applications received and their relevance to the topic/issues of the symposium.
Texts of scientific articles based on reports made can be published in the bilingual international electronic peer-reviewed journal Medical Anthropology and Bioethics (RSCI; see the rules for the design and preparation of texts: http://www.medanthro.ru / ).
Based on the reports, it is proposed to publish a collection of scientific papers of the symposium (the heads of sections and round tables who provided a block of articles based on the speeches of their speakers will have to join the editorial board directly involved in the preparation of books(s) for publication, i.e. participate in the collection of texts of articles and work with the authors, eventually providing the texts of their speakers in the form of a block of articles (or chapters(s) of a collective monograph, if a decision is made to publish texts in this genre).
The texts of the articles must be submitted by September 1.
The participants of the symposium will receive electronic certificates certifying the submission of their author’s report (a paper version of the certificate can be made on request; the cost of issuing a paper certificate is 500 rubles).
For offline participants: registration fee – 1000 rubles; for AMA members who have paid the annual registration fee, and students (undergraduates/postgraduates) – 500 rubles.
