Abstract. The article reviews the basic stages of advancements of the practice-oriented studies in sociology of health and social work with disabled people, performed by the General Sociology and Social Work Dept. of the Faculty for Social Sciences, Nizhny Novgorod National Research Institute. The authors propose the project of a Social Assistance Center for People with Amputated Limbs and Other Disorders of Supporting-Motor Apparatus in the Nizhny Novgorod Region. The center’s interdisciplinary features and its general functions are outlined. Among the functions are consultations on the whole range of amputees’ problems, holding case councils, task teams visiting patients, work with disabled people’s families. The center’s creation could be regarded as a beginning of formation of the Nizhny Novgorod’s rehabilitation system for high-level amputees, matching the generally recognized standards and capable of satisfying the needs of those seeking help.
