Abstract. The article reviews, from the point of view of a traveler and participant of the events, introduction of mass restrictions at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in India and Latvia, as well as the local population’s reactions. The author tracks the negative ecological impact of the fast growing tourist industry, the globalization and technization processes associated with it. The COVID-19 pandemic is considered as a consequence of disbalance between human activities and the nature. Such global risks, affecting the whole humankind, appear because of the activities typical for modernity, including voluntary nonlinear migrations of tourists.
